Simple Laptop Maintenance Tips To Keep It Running Smoothly

Laptop computers are subjected to more wear and tear than a stand-alone PC.  Therefore, it is no surprise that simple laptop maintenance can improve the performance and longevity of this most valuable of office tools.

Following are simple tips to ensure that your laptop performs well for many years.

Warranty:  Ensure that the laptop you purchase comes with a legitimate warranty.  Read it carefully to understand the details and become knowledgeable about the options and conditions of the warranty.  Keep it filed so that you can refer to it if necessary.  Many companies will repair or replace the laptop under warranty.

Laptop carrier bag:  Portability is one of the reasons many people choose laptops.  When choosing a carrier bag for your laptop, make sure it fits snugly.  Avoid purchasing a bag that has too much space or is too tight.  These will not provide the protection from shock and accidents.  Select a bag that has a proper amount of cushioning and straps that fasten over the laptop.

Cleaning:  The laptop screen is a delicate surface and is prone to scratches if not cared for properly.  Office supply stores sell special lint-free cloths to use in wiping off your computer screen.  A soft chamois cloth can be used as well.  If the screen has a spot that is oil-based, place a small amount of low-foam soap on a lint-free cloth and wipe.  You can wipe down the keyboard and touch pad with the same method.  Avoid placing anything wet on the keyboard or touch pad.

Maintain the hard drive:  Regular maintenance of your laptop hard drive will increase your storage and help your computer run more smoothly.  Download old, rarely used files to electronic media such as a CD or USB drive.  Delete any unnecessary files, such as temporary internet files and cookies.  These can really bog down your computer’s speed.  Using software to clean your hard drive is best, thus removing it completely.  CCleaner is a freeware utility program that you can use.  You should also perform a disk defragment monthly.

Keep it clean:  Try not to indulge in food and drink while working at your laptop computer.  Liquid spills can cause your computer to short-circuit and destroy it easily.  Dropping food crumbs into your keyboard can be bothersome.  If you do happen to drop crumbs in your keyboard, use an electronic duster spray to remove them.

Clean hands:  Don’t use your laptop with greasy or dirty hands.  This could add to the accumulation of dust and abrasives that will harm your computer’s surface.  It can wear down the keypad, making it difficult to read the characters.

By following these simple steps for laptop maintenance, you will increase the productivity and longevity of this asset to your business.  Keep your laptop clean, inside and out.  Protect it with a proper carrier bag and ensure that the warranty provides the services you may require.
